Railroad Safety![]() The national leader with 58 operating railroads, Pennsylvania continues to educate motorists and pedestrians on the importance of railroad safety through Operation Lifesaver. Operation Lifesaver is an international, non-profit education and awareness program dedicated to ending tragic collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights of way. To accomplish its mission, Operation Lifesaver promotes 3 E´s: Education, Enforcement and Engineering. Driving and Pedestrian Safety TipsIn 2010, there were 48 collisions at highway-rail crossings, resulting in one fatality and 16 injuries. While highway-rail crossings can be dangerous, there are more fatalities and injuries associated with trespassing on railroad property in 2010, with 23 fatalities and 19 injuries.
